S/O to activists Greta Thunberg, Mari Copeny, and Emma Gonzales for using social media to fight for positive world change!
S/O to actress Jameela Jamil for using social media to push back against impossible beauty standards!
S/O to YouTuber Lilly Singh for using social media to motivate and encourage women!
Okay, media, we’ve had more than enough content that showcases girls being mean, catty and hypercompetitive. We know it can make for riveting drama, but it also makes girls feel there’s something inherently destructive about their gender. It also convinces girls and women that we have to battle for top spots. We can do better; we owe to ourselves and each other.
This holiday season, we’re promoting girl empowerment by collectively helping to flip media culture…together! At a time, when Instagram, Snapchat and other social media apps are known for breeding insecurity and loneliness, MEDIAGIRLS teaches girls and young women to use it for creating connection and positivity.
How YOU can spread the shine:
1. Use your social media to shout-out a girl or young woman (or a whole bunch of them) in your life that inspires you, letting her know exactly why. Ask her to pay forward the joy by shouting-out her inspiration. Just think of all the happiness we can spread!
2. Use our #spreadtheshine Facebook frame by going to FB, hovering over your profile picture and clicking “update profile picture.” Select “add frame” and look for our “MGSHINE” frame; or Desktop users can go to https://www.facebook.com/profilepicframes and search for our “MGSHINE” frame.
Prefer to use Insta stories? Just pick your favorite sparkly or shiny gif!
3. Include the hashtag #spreadtheshine and #dayofthegirl so we can watch our empowerment & positivity spread.
4. Our tag for FB is “mediagirls.org” and for Instagram it’s @mediagirls.org.
This holiday season the nonprofit @mediagirls.org is celebrating girl empowerment by inviting all of us to s/o girls and women that help us shine. @Name, I so appreciate that you helped me get through mid-terms in one piece! Thank you, and hope you’ll #spreadtheshine to a young woman who inspires YOU. Let’s promote girl’s empowerment by lifting up one another! [Attach link to this post to send on instructions.]
Let’s use our media-making superpowers to help empower all girls and women! We all deserve the spotlight and have the power to spread the shine.
